EARTH MOTHER (AFRICA)
Reviving the Sacred: African Indigenous Wisdom
&
THE BLACK MADONNA
(Oshun, Asase Yaa, Oshu Lens)Luisah Teish offers a clear insight into the twisted natures of gaze onto the Dark Mother and how she continually morphs through transgression, taboo, transformation, transmutation, liberation.
I would like to be very careful in centralising the transgressive and the toxic as initiator, as catalyst, as rite of passage, as reflection of power, not only as victim, broken, disgraced, scapegoated, wrong, cursed, apathetic, numbed.
I think it is very important to discern from which gaze-bed comes which information about the Dark Goddess. (in this video Luisah speaks in response to Mary as a figure in Roman Catholicism)
Luisah grew up in New Orleans on Turtle Island, so she has unique double sights, which comes with the diasporic identity in refusal/resistance to an internal & external coloniser-altered-ego.
01:04:12 • Reviving the Sacred: African Indigenous Wisdom & Healing – Yemi Penn (Host), Iya Affo, Rutendo Ngara, Obafemi Fayemi
This seminar is packed with codes.
‘We have to reject the pathologising of indigenous ways of being.’
‘Africa has always played a role, but its never been heard.’
I thought it was very potent that, Chief Obafemi Fayemi, (who is author of Understanding the Fundamentals of Odu, 2020) spoke at 1:45 in the video of the term ‘festish preist’ in the language. In indoctrination and in colonisation, there are supersitions built into spirituality. Projecting into this as ‘fetish spirituality’ is a totally western concept and one which has been put into these practices as the western collective shadow, as oppressor (bad object), and is not originating from these practices.
- ‘inefficiency’, slowness, is associated with richness of life.
- colonisation is a social process
- hope lies in tthe breaking, we are invited to brake.
- The Makhonjwa Mountains, in South Africa are considered the oldest mountain range on Earth and a contender for the oldest part of the planet. They are estimated to be around 3.5 billion years old.
NB - the second oldest is in Pilbara region in Australia, The Pilbara Craton, dating back to around 3.4 billion years. The traditional Aboriginal owners of the area that the range runs through are the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura peoples.
The Juukan Gorge was a part of this, dating pre the Ice Age and found to be holding original power objects.
This was destroyed by Rio Tinto Mining in 2020, against Sacred Elders wishes, causing immense public uproar.
